What Is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)?
4 min readTranscranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) uses magnetic pulses delivered through a coil placed against the scalp to stimulate targeted regions of the brain. Depending on the pulse pattern used, TMS can be applied diagnostically, to assess nerve pathway function, or therapeutically, most notably in the treatment of depression that hasn't responded to medication.
In diagnostic use, TMS helps evaluate the integrity of motor pathways from the brain to the muscles, which is useful in certain neurological workups. In therapeutic use, repeated sessions of patterned stimulation are applied over several weeks under a structured treatment protocol.
