What Is Transcranial Doppler (TCD)?
4 min readTranscranial Doppler (TCD) is a non-invasive ultrasound technique that measures blood flow velocity in the arteries at the base of the brain. It gives clinicians real-time insight into cerebral circulation without the need for imaging modalities like CT or MRI angiography.
TCD is commonly used to detect vasospasm following subarachnoid hemorrhage, assess stroke risk in patients with sickle cell disease, evaluate blood flow in patients with suspected intracranial stenosis, and monitor cerebral circulation during certain surgical procedures.
Because the technique relies on locating and tracking specific vessels through the skull's thinner regions, both the quality of the ultrasound system and the sonographer's technique significantly affect diagnostic accuracy.
