What Is an EMG Machine?
4 min readElectromyography (EMG) measures the electrical activity produced by muscles, typically alongside nerve conduction studies (NCS) that measure how well and how fast electrical signals travel along a nerve. Together, EMG and NCS help diagnose conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, peripheral neuropathy, and various neuromuscular disorders.
An EMG study usually involves a needle electrode inserted into specific muscles while the patient contracts and relaxes them, with the resulting signal displayed and recorded for the physician to interpret. Nerve conduction testing uses surface electrodes and mild electrical stimulation instead, and is often performed in the same session.
Because EMG/NCS is technique-dependent, facilities should prioritize systems with clear, low-noise signal acquisition and stimulation software that makes standard protocols easy to run consistently across patients.
